Freeman Showcases Speed Throughout 5th annual Longhorn Shootout

Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Dec. 1, 2014) – Cody Freeman had the car to beat last weekend at the 5th annual Longhorn Shootout.

“It went great overall,” he said. “We had the car to beat. If I wouldn’t have overdrove it we would have probably won that race.”

Freeman said he gained a ton of confidence following the strong outing during the nonwing micro sprint event at Resistol Arena, which kicked off on Friday with a pair of heat races.

“In hot laps our car was a little underpowered so we had to put some gear into it,” he said. “Once we did that it was really good.”

Freeman powered from fourth to win his first heat race.

“In the first heat race the car in front of me would get on the gas and slide up and hit the wall,” he said. “The first time I got into the back of her and someone got into the back of me. She did it on the second restart and I was able to miss it. I moved up to the outside of the front row then.”

Freeman ran a patient race and he pulled away from field after taking the lead. He then rallied from seventh to fourth place in his second heat race, which put him second in overall points. That started him on the outside of the front row of the main event on Saturday.

Freeman took the lead on the opening lap.

“I led for about three laps and then I overdrove it coming out of turn four,” he said. “I got on the gas too hard and too early. I went down to the inside of the track and hit the berm, which made my chain come off.”

After a quick trip to the work area, Freeman returned to the track at the back of the field. Unfortunately, he was caught up in another incident near the midpoint of the race, which forced him to the pits with an 18th-place result.

He will have the next month off before opening the 2015 season Dec. 31 to Jan. 3 at the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla., for the 30th annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout.
